John Baxter
Chief Financial Officer
John Baxter is the Chief Financial Officer of LWK Capital, where he oversees the firm’s financial strategy, capital management, and operational governance. Since joining the leadership team in 2022, he has played a central role in strengthening the firm’s financial infrastructure and positioning LWK Capital for sustained, disciplined growth across its investment activities.
Academic Foundations
John’s career in finance was built on a rigorous academic foundation in the United Kingdom. He attended Marlborough House School in Buckinghamshire before completing his secondary education at Whitmore College, a well-regarded independent school in Oxfordshire known for its strong tradition in mathematics and economics.
He went on to read Economics and Management at Pemberton College, University of Oxford, graduating with First Class Honours in 1999. His undergraduate studies gave him a grounding in microeconomic theory, corporate finance, and quantitative analysis that would prove foundational throughout his career.
Following Oxford, John pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Strategy at the London School of Business and Finance, where he focused on treasury operations, capital markets, and corporate restructuring. He subsequently earned his qualification as a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA) in 2003, and in the years that followed added both the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) credential and a Certificate in Corporate Treasury from the Association of Corporate Treasurers to his professional qualifications. This combination of academic depth and professional accreditation equipped him with a distinctive blend of strategic perspective and technical precision.
Career in the United Kingdom
John began his career in 2001 at Haringford & Partners, a mid-sized accountancy and advisory firm based in the City of London, where he trained as a graduate accountant before moving into corporate advisory work. Over four years with the firm, he developed expertise in audit, financial reporting, and due diligence for mergers and acquisitions, working across clients in manufacturing, professional services, and early-stage technology.
In 2005, he joined Carrington Mills Bank, a UK-based commercial bank with a focus on lending to mid-market enterprises. As a Senior Financial Analyst and later Finance Manager, John was responsible for credit risk modelling, portfolio performance reporting, and capital adequacy analysis. His time at Carrington Mills gave him firsthand exposure to the intersection of corporate finance and regulated banking environments, and he earned a reputation for clarity in presenting complex financial information to senior stakeholders and board committees.
By 2010, John had moved to Loxford Harrington plc, a diversified financial services group headquartered in Canary Wharf. Initially appointed as Head of Financial Planning and Analysis, he was promoted within three years to Group Financial Controller, overseeing statutory reporting, tax planning, and internal controls across the organisation’s UK and European entities. During this period, he led the finance workstream for a significant restructuring of the group’s capital base following regulatory changes in the post-financial-crisis environment.
In 2014, John took on the role of Finance Director at Ashworth Reed Capital, a London-based private equity firm specialising in mid-market buyouts across the industrials and business services sectors. At Ashworth Reed, he was responsible for fund-level financial management, investor reporting, and the financial due diligence process for new platform investments. His ability to translate complex transaction structures into clear financial narratives made him a trusted partner to the investment team and to the firm’s institutional limited partners.
Transition to Australia
In early 2016, John was approached by an executive search firm acting on behalf of Meridian Harbour Group, a Sydney-based investment and asset management company with a portfolio spanning commercial real estate, infrastructure, and private credit. The firm was seeking a Group Chief Financial Officer to lead its finance function through a period of expansion and operational refinement.
After careful consideration, John accepted the role and relocated to Sydney with his family. At Meridian Harbour, he oversaw the consolidation of the group’s financial reporting across multiple asset classes, led the implementation of a new enterprise resource planning system, and worked closely with the board on capital allocation and risk governance. He also played a key role in managing the financial dimensions of several significant portfolio transactions, including the restructuring of a major infrastructure debt facility and the divestment of a non-core property portfolio.
His six years at Meridian Harbour deepened his understanding of Australian financial markets, regulatory frameworks, and institutional investor expectations, while reinforcing his commitment to building finance functions that combine rigour with responsiveness.
Leadership at LWK Capital
John joined LWK Capital as Chief Financial Officer in mid-2022. He was drawn to the firm’s disciplined investment philosophy, its focus on long-term value creation, and its ambition to build institutional-quality processes as the business scaled.
In his role, John is responsible for all aspects of the firm’s financial management, including financial reporting and controls, treasury and liquidity management, fund accounting and investor reporting, tax and regulatory compliance, and enterprise risk oversight. He works closely with the Managing Partners and the broader leadership team to ensure that LWK Capital’s financial operations support and reinforce its investment strategy.
Since joining, John has led several initiatives to strengthen the firm’s financial infrastructure. He has overseen the implementation of enhanced reporting frameworks that provide greater transparency to investors and more timely insight for internal decision-making. He has also worked to refine the firm’s capital management policies, ensuring that liquidity and leverage are managed in a manner consistent with the firm’s risk appetite and long-term obligations.
John brings to his role a belief that a strong finance function is not merely a compliance or reporting exercise, but a source of genuine strategic advantage. He places particular emphasis on clear communication, both internally and with external stakeholders, and on building systems and processes that can scale without sacrificing accuracy or accountability.
Perspective and Approach
Across more than two decades in finance, John has worked through multiple market cycles and across a range of organisational contexts, from regulated banks to private equity firms to diversified asset managers. This breadth of experience has shaped his conviction that sound financial management rests on a few consistent principles: intellectual honesty about risk and uncertainty, discipline in capital allocation, and a willingness to ask difficult questions before they become urgent.
He is known among colleagues for his measured judgement, his attention to detail, and his ability to distil complex financial matters into language that supports informed decision-making. Outside the office, John is a keen sailor and a long-standing supporter of community sports programmes for young people in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. He lives in Sydney with his wife and two children.
